Advanced Theatre Studies is intended for junior and senior students who have successfully completed previous drama courses. Students enrolling in these courses will focus on the advanced components of theatre productions. They will continue to refine their skills in a variety of areas, including voice, movement, scriptwriting, directing, and a focus on specific performance areas. Particular attention will be paid to the history of theatre and its role in our culture. They will also explore the relationship between such visual elements as design and directing and the script itself. Students who enroll in these courses will be required to participate in a number of performances, some of which may occur in the evening or on the weekend. These performances will not interfere with home school productions. Students selecting Advanced Theatre Studies courses should be prepared to participate in all aspects of the program and should not enroll if attendance at performances is a problem. Advanced Theatre Studies I and II are offered only at Governor Thomas Johnson High School for two entire instructional blocks daily (180 minutes); students from all other Frederick County public high schools are eligible to audition for and enroll in these courses after meeting admission requirements. Students who are interested in enrolling in these courses should contact Amanda McGrath- ACA Coordinator (240)236-8347, drama teacher at their school or the Office of Visual and Performing Arts (301-644-5264) to obtain further information and an application booklet and to make arrangements for an audition.
