Advanced Visual Arts and Communications Studies is intended for Junior or Senior students who have successfully completed previous foundation art courses; it provides unique preparation in visual art education for students planning to pursue the study of visual art after high school. Students will improve their ability to understand and to organize the elements of art and principles of design. Advanced Visual Art Studies students will work on the development of an individual portfolio, a process portfolio, and refinements in individual artistic styles and techniques. Students will analyze and critique their own work, as well as the work of others, using design terminology. Students will be able to understand the chronological development from early beginnings of art through the modern world. Some projects may require long-term or intense exploration as well as the purchase of materials and supplies as agreed upon with the teacher.
Advanced Visual Arts and Communications Studies courses are offered only at
Governor Thomas Johnson High School; students from all Frederick County Public
High Schools are eligible to submit a portfolio and enroll in these courses
after meeting admission requirements. Students interested in enrolling in
these courses should contact ACA
Coordinator- Amanda McGrath, an art teacher at their school, or the Office
of Visual and Performing Arts (301) 644-5264 to obtain further information
and an application booklet and to make arrangements for a portfolio review.
