Greek

There are those who call Ancient Greek a "dead language," and that's simply not true. Like Latin, Ancient Greek has not survived to modern day in its pure form. But, as those of you who have taken either class know, the contributions that they have made to current languages are still very apparent, and very beneficial to know.

Catoctin High School is currently the only school in Frederick County that offers the Introduction to Ancient Greek course.

The major objectives are:

  • To comprehend and translate into English selected ancient Greek materials.
  • To understand contributions of Greek to English
  • To compare Greek and English grammatical structures
  • and to develop awareness of Greek institutions and customs in the Western world.

During the course, students learn to read Greek passages. There are also sub-units about the Greek city-states, Greek theater, the history of written languages, contributions of other ancient civilizations to Ancient Greece, Classical architecture, and the famous Greek philosophers.
