Greek City-States

Ancient Greece consisted of many large cities, called city-states. Although the citizens of these city-states still called themselves Greeks, their home cities (a city was also known as a "polis") were usually more important to them. Trade disputes, along with political struggles, led the cities into several civil wars.

Some of the most powerful and influential city-states were Athens, Sparta, Thebes, Corinth, Argos, and Delphi.

The Introduction to Ancient Greek course includes a sub-unit in which students research and present information about each polis, including its contributions to Greek mythology, architecture, and government, as well as other information about its history and economy.
