 Greek Alphabet
Quick information about the Greek Alphabet:
- Our word "alphabet" is derived from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, "alpha" and "beta."
- The lowercase Greek figures are used frequently in mathematics:
- π - Pi = half the circumference of a circle in radians - commonly rounded to 3.14
- φ - Phi = 1.618. This number is derived from the Fibonacci Sequence and is often referred to as the Divine Proportion because it appears often in nature. Try doing a Google search for "Phi" or "Divine Proportion" and see what comes up.
- Many of the other characters are used as variables in different formulas.
- When reading through the letters, notice how certain groups are in an order very similar to that of our own modern alphabet.
- You may also recognize the symbols from college fraternities and sororities.
- If you'd like to try typing in Greek characters, the alphabet is available through the "Symbol" font.
