Greek Prefixes

One of the most practical applications of Ancient Greek is recognizing prefixes that it contributed to modern English. The SATs are notorious for including vocabulary words that are not commonly used. In that situation, students who recognize Greek and Latin prefixes often have a great advantage.

Below are a few examples of common ancient Greek prefixes that are still used often today, and what they mean:

ana- up, back, again, thoroughly
amphi- around, on both sides, both
ec-, ex- out of, from
a-, an- not, without
cata-, cat- down, completely
apo- away, from
di- two, twice, double

hemi- half
meta- change, after
para-, par- beside
eu-, ev- will
hyper- above, excessive
en-, em- in, on
hypo- under
pro- before, toward
epi-, ep- upon
